Hey guys! So after a month of getting all of my equipment and supplies I finally completed my first rod. Since this was my first build, I decided to order a kit to make it easy on me. I went with a MHX 7ft fast action blank. I learned alot from my first build and I realized that ordering a cheaply made hand wrapper was a bad idea. I will soon be getting a power wrapper to make the process go alot faster. The dream reamer worked like charm and it made quick work of the cork handles. Since my fishing trip was coming up soon, I didnt do anything fancy with it. I wrapped the guides with a teal color thread and put an abalone red fish decal on it. Man it looks nice!! Me, my wife and my buddy went out on his boat yesterday and we fished trinity bay. Fishing was slow but i was able to test out my new rod on a 24" redfish:) The rod performed excellent and I couldnt have been happier. At the end of the day we had 3 reds and 1 speck. I had a blast and I can't wait to build my next rod. I will post some pics soon.

its a kick aint it, building your own then catching a fine fish (almost as good as having sex), heheh

but ya gata watch it or you will wind up like me, last count was 23 rods (not all are new rods but rebuilds that people have given me that they said "There just to far gone" to mess with and now they want em back , heheh

It's definitely that addictive:) lol I'm going to start my next build really soon. My wife was having a hard time throwing my baitcaster so I think I'm going to build her a spinning rod.

Hey Jason - When I started out I built a power wrapper. Glad I did but found it tricky to use at first. I found myself unwinding as much as winding. I then started turning by hand. As I got comfortable with "the process" I started using the power wrapping. I'm not sayin' don't get a power wrapper. If you get one go for one that has a good chuck on it cause it will need to have good holding power to grasp the rod end and not slip. Seen posts on boards about people upgrading from a cheaper power wrapper to a better one. All I'm trying to say don't give up on a hand wrapper. Save your money until you can get a good wrapper. Then go to FTU on Gulf Freeway and see what they have and talk some more with Terry.
