D2 product test (marbling pigments)

Silvia @Bullard International has some of us to test some marbling pigments she might be introducing soon.

I received 2 shades of blue pigment in powder form and a jar of tan in paste form.
As you can see in the pix all 3 colors created a nice opaque colored epoxy. I mixed 18cc (total mix) and each foil tin has about 4cc (maybe a bit less in the tan). In each blue tin I added .2 grams of pigment  and the tan being a paste about the same volume but probably heavier due to the carrier.

Silvia recommended the powders be dissolved in an alcohol carrier like DNA before adding to the epoxy but as I prefer not to add any solvents to my finish I wanted to see if the powder could be added without the alcohol and poured it directly into the epoxy. I did get some tiny granules that needed to be crushed as I was mixing but I expected that so I used a glass rod to mix the pigment into the epoxy. The glass rod has a nice rounded end and being hard it easily crushed & mixed the powder/epoxy into a nice paint like consistency. I am quite pleased with all 3 pigments but I find powders easier to work with and measure accurately.

I'll have to do some more testing and add a carrier like acetone or DNA just to be fare and cover all bases but so far so good!

This 2 inch area I did was just for testing and to show a student a short marbling demo. Nothing fancy really & I should have used a light colored blank or used the tan as the dominant background color. The dark blue really didn't show up well against the black & the tan looks more white than tan unless the light hits it just right.

Very cool Raymond! You guys are pro's at what all to do with these pigments. Didn't you just love the vibrant color of the blues? They seem to come alive as soon as they are mixed and really they already look like that before mixing.

Way to go, and thanks for all of the info. I am making notes for the receipes to include in the instruction booklet. The measurements are a great help.

Thanks!
Silvia

Did some additional testing with the Bullard powder pigment today and this time I dissolved the powder in DNA first. I must admit it mixed easier & quicker in the DNA. I probably used twice the amount of DNA though. I used a full pipe-et for .2grams of pigment and added the pigment/DNA to a 6cc total mix of epoxy and the epoxy was quite thinner than I wanted and had to wait for the DNA to evaporate off. Still worked out well though.

This time I wrapped some white NCP on for the background and only used the 2 blue powders. The 2 color blues show up more like one as they are so close in shade though.
