Muskie Rod: LGM102XH

I just finished my muskie rod last week and I was able to fish it over the weekend.  I picked up the blank (LGM102XH) in High Point and this was the first I've had time to work on it!  I'm very pleased with the looks and performance.  I went with the variegated EVA from Billy V and I did a white tiger wrap in the split grip.  I did a simple spiral starting with a MNSG 20 for the height (don't wanna cut my thumb!).  The bumper is an SG 6, the first 180 a MNSG 10, and the runners are all SG 6's. I finished with a FST 7-7.5 but I have a MGST 8-7.5 for backup should the unexpected occur.  The guides and hooker keeper are wrapped in black with white triim and gold single thread inlays.  I don't particularly like gold, but it was appropriate here to match the gold Lamiglass decal.  I used D2, of course!  I love that stuff!!!

Do you always spiral your rods? Is that poplular up there?

Thanks for posting!

Funny and true on the 'cudas Terry! Except I wouldn't try to net a cuda! haha

Terry,

I really like working with the variegated EVA that Billy has. It's great stuff and I've had some awesome feedback from everyone that sees it. I just finished a grip for a spinning rod where I used it for the fihgting butt and as 'plugs' for the end of the reel seat. I'll post some pictures when I get a chance.

I don't build many casting rods, just a few here and there. The majority of my clients are spinning guys. I chose to do a spiral on my muskie rod because of the benefit of the reduced torque. On a bass rod I personally don't find it necessary but I do it anyway- just for the strange looks I get from guys when they see it! I haven't been able to talk many guys into allowing me to do a spiral wrap on their rods.

Doug,

Thanks, I did catch a fish on the rod but unfortunately it was a bass. He hit one of my big muskie lures. I've actually found that I catch quite a few big bass on my 8" crankbaits when I'm fishing for muskies. I may be on to something...
