its Elk horn, i use to do some scrimshaw way back when but i'd guess that was in the 60's or so. the wifes uncle was a guide on Mount Saint Helen's and he sent me a full rack (that was when i was making knives ) and before it blew.
i had seen Terry Henson's rods with his version of the may-flys and the light bulb went on and i said HA! something i can do thats different then the beginner stuff i had been doing.
besides there is no way i could ever do a weave or wraps like some of you guys do.
hahah, its been a trip for sure, now lets hope i dont screw up the final coat on the rod eyes .
well i tested the scrimshaw rod (ya i decided to name "her" that, hahah) today and all i can say is it casts like a dream ( no weight, a 1 ft 40lb mono, and 2 small hooks and half a med size shrimp of each hook) i'd say 75 ft easy.
its got good back bone and tip action, nothing great but about 25 or so 1 to 2 lb crokers, 2, 3lb drum.
its now gona be my go to rod, problem is a no name brand from FTU.
Terry, That scrimshaw is awesome! You could do quite well by working in pen/ink and scrimshaw...but is nice to see you succeed in your challenge and land a big ole jack! Congrats!!
