I'm hoping MLV can answer, but anyone w/ insight is welcome. What is the preferred tanning method for the skins that we can use on rods? I've been reading online, and some use glycerin/alcohol...will that interfere w/ our CP/finish? I bought 1 copperhead skin in NC to play w/, it's tissue thin w/ no oily residue. Now I think I want to try to do my own copperhead skins. I think I can handle the skinning/defleshing, but want to use something that is compatible w/ rodbuilding...not looking to make leather handbags. Thanks for any replies. Jerry
Jerry..... First...don't ever use alcohol and glycerin to tan a snakeskin..I have some that were tanned by that method and after three years they are still greasy .... Copperheads are not easy to skin or tan....with most tanning methods they will lose their scales.... If you still want to tan your own copperhead skin..buy a product called SnakeTan from Tandy Leather..it is pricey , but good !! It is cheaper and easier for you to buy your copperhead skins already tanned using the correct method..if they feel oily , do not buy them... Most copperhead skins are tissue thin and they can tear easy if stretched or pulled...you have got to be gentle with them... Hope I have answered your questions....
Is this the stuff...Rep-Tan? http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/home/department/Liquids-N/22046-00.aspx?feature=Product_2
I'll definitely wait until I find and try to skin some copperheads before I purchase it, as it IS pricey. My sis and b-i-l live on a golf course in Katy...1 June night 3 yrs ago, he found 21 copperheads in less than 2 hrs, w/o leaving the cart path. I figure there's more than a few still around. Thanks, MaryLou!

I believe the SnakeTan..and RepTan are simiular products...and both are pricey....but if you want something even pricier..go to the WASCO catalogue and price out the Rittles Snake Tan...
