Glenn Postik posted today. Thank you Glenn. I was beginning to think I was the only one that ever checked tis board. I have been using a lot of Rainshadow blanks and I really like them. There is a wide choice of styles and actions. There has to be something to fit your needs. I use the IP 842 for soft plastics rods and IP 844 for topwaters. I have built several IP 842 rods for customers including fishing guides that have rod sponsors and they really like them. They let their customers fish with the sponsor rods and they use mine or at least that is what they are telling me. Let's get some more activity on this board. Pat
I use my 823 for both plastic and top waters. I can not find any blank that competes with the Rainshadow and will be building "MY" rods on them and them only.
I just got back to the point with work and everything else to the point where I can get back into the rod building and checking this site. I did notice that the post did look a little slow.
I do have a question on how much to charge when building a rod. I have a few people that want me to build for them. I know in my industry like any other you do not want someone to blow the doors out with super low prices. So lets say you have $100.00 in material and not a lot of detail work in the build. How much should I charge to stay in line with the builders out there. If you need to answer off line you can send by PM or email to gposik@att.net thanks.
Glenn I try to make at least $100 over my cost on my rods. The rods I am building for wadefishermen on the IP 842 blank I sell for $175. That is cheap for a custom rod but I can build it in about 3 to 3 1/2 hrs not counting glue and finish drying time. If I put a crosswrap on it that takes me 2 or 3 hours I add $50. If I do a weave I add $75. If I were building for a living and I built a lot more rods than I do now I would probably charge more. I have to be careful not to let rodbuilding interfere with my fishing. I am the Director of the Rods For Soldiers program so I build several rods a month for that and also spend quite a bit of time doing fundraising for that. You decide how much you think your time and talent is worth and charge accordingly. Actually you should charge more than that because we all seem to sell ourselves short. Pat
I have seen the rods you posted for the wadefisher model and they are nice. That answers my queston about how much to make. I have sold a few rods with high end blanks and try to keep them with nothing fancy at or about the same price as a Waterloo or Loomis. I think I need to renew my membership, but need to hook up with you and build some more rods for our troops. I posted pics of a rod on 2 cool for a guy in iraq. on there I am wingshooter. Thanks again and if work schedule and my fishing time allow I need to make a TRB meeting.
John as long as you keep 'em simple you can sell them for that. If you do crosswraps and weaves you need to get paid for your time and talent. I really enjoy making the simple wadefish rods because I canknock 'em out in a hurry. Pat
