What would you like to see?

What would you like to see as a training session at the upcoming Member meeting 6/28?
Please give us some suggestion so we can plan accordingly!

I would like to see Doug do a weave of the Texas Rod Builders logo in 45 minutes!

I would like to see someone do a demo on the use of a lathe and making different grips out of cork, wood, foam and EVA. I am buying a lathe this weekend and I have no idea how to use it. I intend to buy a Jet 1014 lathe with a bed extension and variable speed. I hope I am not scewing up. I also need to know about the cork and EVA cutting jigs.

Sorry for the slow response, but I haven't visited in a couple of days. Pat, about all I can say is I bought the same lathe (Jet JML1014) used and bought the bed extension and a vari-speed motor kit afterwards. I've has used mine 1 time just to play with the tools and get an idea of there uses. I have done enough to realize that the shaping aspect of a rod grip or handle is going to be the easy part since the shapes are simple. Glue up and construction of blanks (grip blanks) will be much more difficult than the actual shaping. I bought Andy Dears video"the lathe in rodbuilding". It is very simple and easy to follow. I'll bring it to the meeting and you can check it out. I had thought about bringing it to the show but man what a cleanup there would have to be. FYI, dont set up anywhere aren't willing to get dusty/dirty. The guys on the 2cool woodworking board are a real good bunch and will help with even the most simple of questions. Don't ask me how I know this. OK now you reached the depths of my lathe knowledge.LOL. A couple of online supply sources is Penn State Industries(PSI) Woodcraft.com, CraftSupplies USA(CSU). lotsa others,,,,Jim

Big John what kind of skins?  MLV is an expert on snakeskins especially on cork but I'm certain that it would work on foam also.  Walmart sell a spray on adhesive that works very well.

It has been my experience, that contact cement is the best adhesive to use on a handle.....I have tried RodBond, that only disadvantage is the curing time....
If you are going to apply a skin to the rodblank, you can use color preserver for the adhesive...
I prefer to use cork over foam....the softness of the foam can eventually loosen up the skin.....if you do use foam, buy the best grade you can find...you do not want to use, a soft foam grip, when applying snakeskin to a handle...

I would like to see some more pointers as to how to get started in the craft, basic necesities for getting started, and basic how to's. I am planning on attending the March 13th Basic Class but really can find any info on what is actually needed to get started other then the rod kit. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

If there is a rod buiilder in your area he would probably be happy to show you everything. Post up where you are located and I may know someone in your area.
If you can get the CD from Flexcoat called "How we do it." that is a great place to start. I loaned both of my copies out and now I don't know where they are but I think FTU has them in stock.
When I first got started I would buy rods at garage sales and pawn shops. I would strip them down and rebuild them. I had a pawn shop give me a hand full just to get rid of them. So basicly what I am saying is you need some instruction but you really start learning when you start doing.

Hey robert! I just sent you a confirmation email for the class.
When you say "what you need" are you wanting to know in general what is involved in rod building, or do you mean what do you need to bring to the class? If its what do you need to bring...its basically nothing. You will need to buy the rod kit, ee will be supplying everything else. if you have some special tools of your own, you are welcomed to bring them...but you dont need them
You will learn what you will need to buy if you want to build rods at home from the class...if you want that information, I can send you something.

Thanks Robert!
Looking forward to seeing you!

I am located in Cypress.  I will be at the class on March 13.  I have been practicing on an old broken rod that i had laying around, basic guide tying and starting to try to weave (its ugly though).  I work at Ellington and am going to try to stop by FTU tomorrow after work to look around.

Making decals at home, with an inkjet printer, would be sweet.
