i have an old junk rod that has the tiptop broke off right at the tip, (the rod was given to me). how do i measure it to get a replacement with out using a micrometer ?

on some sites the rod eyes are in numbers that equate to inches but in some other places "spinning guide set is talks about "groups , i.e. D or E, etc. can anyone explain the difference?, i am lost as to how to figure it out. thanks
