Painting a rod blank?

If anyone can give advice on how to paint a rod blank, it would be greatly appreciated.  I'd like to try something new and don't really want to wreck the blank I just bought.

Also, if any of you have any pro/cons on what clear coat to use, I'd really like to hear about that (lumiseal, CPxtra, permagloss, clear duplicolor for auto bumpers or just a harware store PU).

i have used Krylon ( and they now have some killer colors out ) .

all i did was scuff the old paint off (water sand it, if its needs to be removed ) 360 grit or finer and spray it on , i tried a krylon clear coat over a color coat and just felt that it really was not needed .
now i am only talking about the stuff mentioned above, hope it helps somewhat.
