To Grip, or not to Grip?

I received a wonderful Email today, from Billy Bob Stevens.  He asked for advice on a fly rod grip, so I decided to share this with 'ya'll.

Hellooo Capt. G!

I am amazed at the posts of Captain G on the BD !

I noticed he has fun with fly rods and tuna -

I have only built one fly rod - so could you please help me? -

I want to comply with the IGFA  rules, 'cause I plan on catching a big one someday!

This rod build has stumped me completely.  I want to go for the "Euro Comfort Grip, but, is it IGFA legal?

If at all possible I would appreciate it if you would research this for me.

Capt. G, I love your gold reel - look at my rod and reel setup--it is set for   30 # drag on a fly reel no less!

Thanks again!

 Nice to meet ya, Billy.
I reviewed all eight pictures that you sent of your flyrod, and I must say that it is hard for me to believe this is your first rod--the thread work, coating, and overall build is very good.
Not sure what you mean by the Euro Comfort Grip, but I did look into the IGFA question for you.  I build flyrods for two individuals that are multiple IGFA World Record holders.  While your grip may be withing the IGFA regs, it certainly is not necessary to have your reel so far up the rod.  A lower center of gravity is much better for fighting big fish.
Also, you need to re-think your 30 pounds of drag setting.  The IGFA only recognizes class tippets up to 20 pound test, so having #30 of drag is not only a moot point, but it will get any fish that you catch disqualified.

Also, I realize that you have a smaller than average size arm, but the little black foregrip should be replaced with at least a women's regulation size grip.
I have to be honest, it does look a bit wimpy as well.

Thank you for the comments on my Penn International Fly reel--what a workhorse that classic reel has been for the past 19 years...I have several fish over one hundred pounds on that reel, and it hold half a mile of superthin PE line backing.  I attached a pic of a little #28 pound tuna that I landed on it.
It is a beautiful build for your first rod; keep up the good work!
Again.

Hey G,

It's great to see you here. We gotta catch up. Some fantastic things happening right now for RFS and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy (Pat) or to a better group of guys who run this organization.

Hey, isn't that the older
Penn International 4? Nice, and man if that's the one I am remembering you sent me all the photos of, you have caught a ton on it. I had to look back at all the photos you sent in just that one file and I think I lost count, but I think people would be surprised by what all you have caught on that Penn.

Correct me if I am wrong, but so far this is what the pictures show with the Penn:  Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Bigeye Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, Albacore, Wahoo, Giant Trevally, Blue Start Jack, Horse-Eye Jack, Tarpon (Did I read this correctly 120lb), Cubera Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Snook, Bonito, Giant Needlefish, Roosterfish, Dorado and Sailfish....Whew!!! Thank goodness you had some of them marked or I wouldn't have known what they were. LOL

When do you find the time to do that much fishing????

Awesome craftsmanship on your rods btw--keep it up and keep them coming!

Yep, that be the gold Penn 4, made in the good 'ol USA.
I caught all those fish in a former life, when I used to know how to fish.

What a RFS coincidence--I got an email from legendary legend of all legends, Mr. Doc Ski---he is making a drop dead bass rod with the JDM custom rod parts I donated to RFS.  I feel honored that he is using my stuff, and a soldier will get an unbelievable rod.

In other news, Troy Fishnazzi from BD is doing a wounded warriors tuna charter next year , and I do believe that he wants to hook up a group of warriors from the great State of Texas.  He asked me to donate parts, for rods that will be give to the warriors, and I am in.
I will also hook all the anglers up with my hand made custom albacore jigs that are made from unobtanium.

All good, in the hood,
pls. send more hot dogs, I am running desperately low,
Capt. G
