How did this rod break???

This is a CTS rod that I built a couple of years ago. It has fished many hours and has caught lots of fish over that time. The customer was fishing a super spook and said that it broke on the cast. Does that look right to you?? It's a spinning rod and broke right between the second and third guide from the butt... I have no reason not to believe him, but it's just bothering me trying to figure out why it would break. He fishes spooks with it almost exclusively. Just wondering....

man that sure looks like a clean break , one would expect to be splintered a lot more , i'd (in my opinion ONLY) i'd say its staged or somebody besides the owner used and broke it.

I would need to see a much better photo of the break but from what I see here it is obvious that the rod suffered damage prior to the cast.

Need better photo!

Looks to me that someone help break that rod...I think if the breakage  was cause by a fish, it would be alot more splintered...
I'm no expert....I just had one returned, that a fish/cast broke it.....Tom Kirkman said it was a guaranteed crushing break...

Here is the link for my splintered rodbreak..
Hope this helps Kyle...

The last issue of Rodmaker had a pretty big spread on the subject of breakage. Based on what I can see on the CTS and comparing it to the mag. pics, I'm gonna GUESS an impact failure, though maybe not immediately after the impact.

I'm gonna agree with Jerry.... My father has had a couple of rods come back to him that didn't look much different than that.

Kyle, pick up a copy of Texas Saltwater Fishing, May edition, it an article called Technical views of rod failures, complete with pictures.

It might help you and you will have something to show your customer
